We will show you how to save on your electricity bill by reducing heating and cooling costs
Follow the tips below to reduce your home heating costs. Heating and cooling account for as much as half of the electricity used in your home, so it accounts for a large percent of your electricity bill. Something as simple as running your air conditioner at 78 degrees instead of 72 will save 40% of your cooling expense bill. And here are a few other tips:
- Be sure to exercise careful thermostat control. It is a matter of personal preference, but 68 degrees during the daytime and 55 degrees at nighttime is recommended during cooler months. If you use a heat pump, turn the thermostat down no more than 10 degrees at night. Also, consider a programmable thermostat.
Cost: Nothing Savings: 2-3 percent per degree of adjustment
- How to save electricity in warm weather, you can open windows on all sides of the house, for natural cooling. Also use fans, such as ceiling fans, instead of the air conditioner unit when you can do so without sacrificing comfort.
Cost: Negligible Savings: $7–$8 per month
- Close your fireplace and wood stove dampers when they are not in use. Warm air will rise right up an open chimney. It is equivalent to leaving a four foot window in your home wide open. If you can still feel a draft even with the fireplace damper closed, strongly consider installing tight-fitting fireplace door or a fireplace draft stopper plug in the fireplace to help save on electric bill.
- Another tip for how to save. Caulk and seal holes and gaps in your exterior walls. Check around telephone wires plumbing pipes, exhaust fans, sink dryer vents and bathtub drains, under countertops and around fireplaces for small holes, cracks, or crevices where air can leak. Use an expanding foam for big holes and caulking to seal the smaller holes and gaps. This little tip is how you can save on your electricity bill, up to 10 percent of your heating and cooling costs.
